What is Asian Handicap Betting + [Examples]

In this article, we focus on yet another well-known betting term - “Asian handicap”. This is a worldwide popular type of bet and our tipsters use it as well. Do you know what the Asian handicap means and how to use it?

Erasing the Difference Between the Favorite and the Underdog with Asian Handicap

The Asian handicap (often abbreviated as AH) allows bettors to wager on the favorite of the match at higher odds than a traditional 1 – X – 2 (Home-Draw-Away) bet. It is often employed in this manner. Essentially, it provides a virtual advantage to the underdog, leveling the playing field with the favorite. Unlike European handicaps where bets can be placed on a win, draw, or loss, the Asian handicap offers only two outcomes – a home win or an away win. This is why the European handicap has been overshadowed by the Asian handicap.

Types of Asian Handicaps

Asian handicaps come in various types, determining potential gains or losses. Terminology is not standardized, so you might encounter different names. We have chosen the following:

Standard Asian Handicap

When we mention handicaps like AH -0.5 or AH -1.5, we are referring to principles similar to the European handicap. If a bettor chooses a team with a -0.5 handicap, the team in question must win by at least one goal for the bet to be successful. A team with a -1.5 handicap must win by two goals for you to succeed.

Asian Handicap Draw No Bet (Full Handicap)

This type of handicap can be represent for instance by AH -1.0. There are only two betting options available. If the team with a -1.0 handicap wins by exactly one goal, the bettor's stake is returned. A win by two or more goals results in a win, whereas a draw or loss means a loss.

Double (Quarter and Three-Quarter) Asian Handicap:

Bets like AH -1.25 or AH -1.75 fall under this category. The handicap splits into two separate handicaps. For AH -1.25, it's -1.0 and -1.5. Betting on a team with a -1.25 handicap means that if the chosen team wins by just one goal, you lose half your stake (half returned for -1.0 and half lost for -1.5). A win by two goals or more brings a win, while a draw or loss results in a failed bet.

Draw No Bet or AH 0

Similar to the Asian handicap draw no bet, but in this case, if the game ends in a tie, the bookmaker refunds the stake. The equivalent of this bet is "draw no bet". You can also find this bet called as "Draw No Bet".

Asian Handicap for Goal Bets

The last category we will discuss is the Asian handicap related to the number of goals in a match. It follows the same principles as the standard handicap. For example, a bet type “number of goals 1.75” means if you bet over, the wager wins when at least three goals are scored in the match. If two goals are scored, you get half the winnings. Anything less results in a loss.

Advantages of Asian Handicap Betting

 – Higher Chances of Winning: Excluding full AH (AH 0) where stakes are refunded, there are only two possible outcomes with Asian handicaps, eliminating one losing option compared to 1X2 bets.

 – Opportunity to Win Even if Your Team Loses: Yes, with Asian handicap betting, this is possible. For instance, by selecting AH +2.5, even if your team loses by two goals or less, you still win.

 – Bookies are Less Restrictive: There are typically higher betting limits on Asian handicaps compared to regular bets, which is especially useful for those placing larger amounts.

FAQ

1️⃣ How does Asian handicap work?

Depending on the type of the Asian hadnicap selected, you are giving an edge to one of the team. For example, with Asian handicap +3,5, your chosen team an advantage of 3,5 goals at the start of the game. If your team win, draw, or even lose by 3 and less goals, you will win. On the contrary, the AH -3,5 means quite the opposite, and you are disadvantaging your chosen team by 3 and a half goal. For the win, your chosen team must win by 4 or more goals.

2️⃣ What does +1.5 Asian handicap mean?

AH +1.5 gives the selected team a one and a half goal advantage at the start of the game. Betting on a team with this handicap means you win if your team draws, wins, or loses by only one goal.

3️⃣ What is an alternative Asian handicap?

Also known as AAH, alternative Asian handicap betting operates similarly to standard Asian handicaps. This kind of betting offers the possibility of a bet ending in a 'push', unlike most other bets on gambling platforms.
